The federal government has not approved the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 as of yet, however it is currently considering an option, and a few cities and states have passed legislation to support it. These rebates are intended to help people cope with the rise in prices. While not a federal program, many of these rebates have been issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government should think about such a scheme as a viable option to tackle the high prices of fuel and other products.
Certain states have tried to reduce their gas prices and are also considering the residents of those states with refunds. Some states, like New York, are considering suspending the gas tax altogether or offering a small refund. The governor has also offered tax cuts for renters or homeowners who pay their gas taxes over those at the national minimum. He has even proposed reducing the gas tax by half when the cost for fuel without leaded hits $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Certain political leaders from New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government isn’t intending to implement any type of stimulus package in the state legislature, lawmakers from the state and President Biden have made a number of proposals for consumers. These proposals include a three month relaxation of the tax on gas. As of late June, nothing concrete is being looked at by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin with all states. While President Obama has offered a national gas tax holiday, he has not found an acceptable legislation to finance the holiday.
