The federal government needs to think about such a scheme as a viable option in order to lower the cost of gasoline as well as other goods.
Certain states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are considering offering the residents of those states with refunds. Some states, including New York, are considering taking the gas tax off completely or offering a tiny rebate. Governor New York has also proposed tax reductions for renters and homeowners who pay gas prices at or above the federal minimum rate.
