However an White House official says the Biden administration is not advocating for a program like this, since it’s a challenge to administer and require Congressional approval. A gas rebate card may be a great temporary solution but there are plenty of issues that must be solved before it can become the reality of American customers.

The federal government has not approved the Gas Rebate Act from 2022. However, it is looking into such plan and some cities and states have put in place legislation for it. Inflation rebate checks are designed as a way to help consumers cope with the increasing cost of living. While it is not a federal program most of the rebates offered are issued by states’ governments using surplus funds. The federal government must consider the possibility of a similar scheme as a method in order to lower the costs of gasoline and other products.
Some states have tried to cut their gas costs and have considered offering tax refunds for their citizens. Certain states, such as New York, are considering stopping the gas tax entirely or offering a modest rebate. Governor Cuomo also has proposed tax cuts for renters or homeowners who pay gas tax in excess of what the Federal minimum. He’s even proposed to cut the tax on gas by half when the average price of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 for a gallon during summer. Some politicians in New York state have also agreed to suspend the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
They are not available in every state.
While the federal government is not looking to roll out any kind of stimulus plan however, state legislators and the President Biden have put forward a variety of ideas that will help consumers. These include a 3 month gas tax holiday. However, as of the end of June the proposal is not being looked at by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates start being distributed to all states. While President Obama has offered that a national tax holiday on gas but he is unable to find any legal way to fund it.
They’re controversial
The issue is not the politics of the idea gas rebate cards are one of many ways to help Americans weather the cost of fuel. However, they have already come up against some resistance. A couple of months ago House Democratic counsel opposed the plan, stating it would increase inflation, it was too expensive and wasn’t targeted well enough. Prior to that, high-ranking White House aides raised concerns about the rebate card because of the lack of microchips.
