The federal government hasn’t adopted the Gas Rebate Act that will take effect in 2022. However, they are considering the idea and some states and cities have already enacted legislation for it. These rebates are intended be used to assist consumers in coping with the increase in costs. Although they are not a federally-funded program, many of the rebates offered are issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government should consider such a plan as a viable option to reduce the current high prices of gas and other products.

Certain states, such as New York, are considering eliminating the gas tax entirely or offering small rebates. The governor has also offered tax relief for renters and homeowners who pay gas tax over thresholds of federal minimum. The governor has even suggested reducing the tax on gas by half when the cost of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 per gallon in summer. Certain politicians in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

These proposals include a three-month relaxation of the tax on gas. As of late June there was nothing concrete being contemplated by Congress. It could be a while before gas rebates begin to be distributed across every state.
