The purpose of these rebates is as a way to help consumers cope with rising prices. Though they are not federal programs the majority of these rebates can be issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government needs to think about the possibility of a similar scheme as a viable option to tackle the high prices for gasoline and other goods.
Some states have tried to cut their gas taxes and are now considering offering rebates or refunds to their residents. Some states, including New York, are considering suspending the gas tax altogether or offering a small refund. The governor has also offered tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who pay gas tax at or above their federally minimum. Governor Andrew Cuomo has even proposed cutting the tax on gas by half when the cost for fuel without leaded hits $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Certain political leaders from New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government has not looking to roll out any kind of stimulus plan state lawmakers and President Biden are putting forward various plans to assist consumers.
