Federal government officials should look into such a scheme as an effective means to combat the current high price of gasoline and other commodities.
A few states have tried to reduce their gas tax and are currently considering offering tax refunds for their citizens. Some states, like New York, are considering stopping the gas tax entirely or offering a modest rebate. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax cuts for renters and homeowners who pay for gas in excess of levels that are higher than federal minimum rates. He even has proposed cutting the gas tax by half when the price for unleaded fuel is $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also agreed to suspend the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government is not in the process of implementing any type of stimulus plan, state lawmakers and President Biden has proposed a variety of solutions for consumers. These include a 3 month gas tax holiday. But , as of June 30 it is unclear what is being contemplated by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin for every state. Although the President has been able to propose nationwide gas tax holidays however, he’s not been able to come up with an acceptable legislation to finance it.
